9/91 to

present

Sole Proprietor, Norwood Designs - Established a multi-faceted design firm to address my many interests and talents. As a graphic design consultant, designed and coordinated the production of projects including, graphic designs, logo designs, four-color brochures, print advertising, flyers, image work, photo realistic renderings, animations, product labeling, packaging and keypads.

As an industrial designer/engineer, designed the following projects hand held drink dispensing head, "Virtual Windows" and "SunBox" portable light therapy system. Designed the housings for, light visor for treatment of "S.A.D.," frozen drink machine and pen based portable computer. Responsible for all technical, aesthetic and ergonomic aspects of these projects.

As a mechanical design consultant, designed and coordinated the production of projects including, an optically-read addressing system, the "Sunrise" alarm clock, "Sportcount" personal lap counter, electric fence for dogs and Responsible for all technical, aesthetic and ergonomic aspects of these projects.

As a graphic designer, created graphic designs, logo designs, photo realistic renderings, animations, product labeling and keypads.

As a computer consultant, performed computer and network services such as PC computer recommendation, installation and set-up, upgrades, troubleshooting, repair and software installation and upgrade. Set-up and maintenance of NT Server over Ethernet connection. Trained clients in the use of Word, Outlook, and other productivity software.

All these services were accomplished by working closely with clients from conception, design and implementation stages, while providing quality at a reduced cost.

HIAC/ROYCO, a Division of Pacific Scientific,

Technical Service Park, 2431 Linden Lane, Silver Spring Maryland 20910

3/90 to

9/91

Mechanical Engineer/Project Leader - Designed the Automatic Bottle Sampler (ABS) used to provide controlled bench-top fluid delivery to particle sensor. This design improved manufacturability, reliability and aesthetics while reducing cost. Redesigned existing Multi-port Scanner portion of an air-borne particle measurement instrument to improve reliability. Coordinated the efforts of an engineering team to design and prototype the next generation of Multi-port Scanner. The scanner development was completed within two months and "photo-ready" prototypes and documentation was finished within the following month. Redesigned two other sample delivery systems to improve performance and reliability.

Catalyst Research, a Division of Mine Safety Appliances

3706 Crondall Lane, Owings Mills, Maryland 21117

9/86 to 1/90 Project Engineer/Design Engineer - Headed the research and development of sensors used for pulse oximetry. Designed two styles of oximetry appliances incorporating surface mounted components, hybrid assemblies, flexible circuitry, specialized shielding techniques and medical grade cables. Drafted product definitions, hazard analysis and specified operating parameters for these devices. Built and tested prototype models for research and clinical trials. Member of the design team which designed a printer companion to the pulse oximeter. My responsibilities included packaging design and layout, documentation and prototype production. Coordinated the selection, purchase and installation of surface-mount assembly equipment including quartz panel I. R. oven, "pick and place" equipment, solder paste dispensing equipment and rework stations, for prototype lab. Supervised the start-up and training of personal, who successfully produced the first prototype run of a complex surface-mount assembly. Also, provided technical assistance to doctors, nurses and bio-technicians, concerning the use of MiniOX IV Pulse Oximeter and accessories. Investigated customer complaints and responded in writing. Traveled to hospitals to observe difficulties and recommend specific remedies.
6/80 to 3/86 Electronic/Applications Engineer - Specialized in battery applications and interfacing techniques, specifically involving battery backup of low power CMOS processors, memory and real time clocks. Managed the production of modular electronic assemblies, supervised a junior engineer and a technician, designed and coordinated a successful full custom I. C. project, as the company's customer interface, provided "over the phone" applications and troubleshooting information and represented the company at electronics conventions. Designed and constructed test equipment for hand-held instruments. Developed and distributed troubleshooting guides for customer use. Conducted field lectures and training sessions using these guides.
PATENTS:
Application number: 20070051749
Abstract: An apparatus that is an adjustable and selective dispensing system for dispensing at least two flowable materials, and into which can be inserted a set of cartridges containing the flowable materials. Each cartridge has a piston end and a metering end. Each cartridge includes a moveable piston at its piston end driven by compressed air pressure created by actuating a pump assembly also resident in the dispensing system. The dispensing system also contains a set of metering discs, one of which adjoins each of the cartridges at the metering end thereof, for selectively dispensing the flowable materials from the cartridges. There are a set of conduits adjacent each of the metering discs for providing a predetermined amount of the flowable materials to be dispensed. A metering control mechanism rotationally actuating the metering discs for controlling the flow of the flowable materials from each of the cartridges is also provided.

Patent number: 6053415
Abstract: A hand-held, light-weight wand for magnetically encodes digital information onto a magnetic stripe or track. Pre-printed timing marks adjacent the magnetic strip, detected by an optical sensor contained in the wand, are used to generate timing signals which control the encoding of the data onto the magnetic stripe. Six rotary thumb-wheel switches are used to dial in a six digit decimal number to be encoded. A write push button switch in the wand body is depressed as the wand is passed along the magnetic stripe. A second pass of the wand along the magnetic stripe reads back the previously encoded signal which is compared the number still dialed into the thumb-wheel switches. If the comparison is favorable, a "successful read" LED also located in the body of the wand is illuminated to signal the operator that the desired number has been correctly encoded. A desktop version of the manual magnetic encoder and an alternate version of the encoding wand using a small numeric keypad for data entry are also shown.

Patent number: 5247931
Abstract: A hinge clamp mechanism and sensor for performing pulse oximetry tests, as well as for performing other diagnostic procedures that can be conducted on a human body part, such as a finger. More particularly, the hinge clamp mechanism utilizes one or more slots, pins and springs to enclose the body part being tested. The hinge clamp relies on a movable pivot point connecting upper and lower portions of the device and the biasing force of one or more cantilevered leaf springs to enable the upper and lower body portions of the device to conform to the upper and lower surfaces of the body part, and to evenly distribute the gripping pressure of the device over the upper and lower surfaces of the body part.
